From WestEdge to the Hollywood Hills: Our Indigo Outdoor Kitchen Finds a New Home at Zappa Nest

We are delighted to share that the Indigo kitchen we showed at WestEdge has found its new home at Zappa Nest in Los Angeles, a guest house with a remarkable creative legacy that has recently been featured by both HUNGER and D5 magazines.

Located high in the Hollywood Hills and overlooking the historic Zappa House, Zappa Nest was once part of the compound built by Frank Zappa in the 1970s and later owned and developed by Lady Gaga. Today, it has been reimagined as a retreat for visiting musicians to live and record, with the recent redesign placing a strong emphasis on colour, atmosphere and collectable design. D5 describes it as a place where bold paint choices drive the whole visual language of the interiors, creating a home that feels energetic, immersive and made for creativity.

That made it a natural setting for our Indigo Stipple kitchen cabinetry, with this particular unit first appearing on our stand at WestEdge Design Fair. The kitchen configuration also boasts a German engineered Zwilling Flammkraft grill with Perlick under counter refrigerator. In a project like this, the qualities of porcelain enamel are perfect- depth of colour, durability and heaps of personality. Indigo has a richness that shifts beautifully in changing light, and the enamel surface offers the same practical benefits that define every Vlaze piece. It is heatproof, weatherproof, hygienic and easy to clean, with a richness of colour that feels especially at home in a design-led environment.

At Zappa Nest, colour was treated as the starting point for the redesign rather than just a finishing touch. D5 notes that the project was led by owner Chris Behlau and mid-century specialist Lars Triesch, with custom and collection colours from Tonester Paints shaping the mood of each room and exterior. Vlaze enamel works in a similar way, with colour always a primary consideration. It is built into the material itself, fused to steel at high temperature so it becomes part of the architecture of the piece.

There is also a pleasing cultural overlap here. HUNGER recently highlighted the former home of Frank Zappa as one of its top photoshoot locations in Los Angeles, and the magazine has also featured Wet Leg, another creative export with Isle of Wight roots. It is a small connection, but one we are happy to enjoy given that we love their music and every Vlaze cabinet is made on the Isle of Wight in our workshops.

For us, this project is a reminder that outdoor kitchens can do much more than just providing a place to cook. In the right setting, they can become part of the visual character of a home. They can echo the palette, support the atmosphere and hold their own alongside serious architecture and interiors. That is exactly what our modular system is designed to do, robust enough for daily use, but refined enough to sit comfortably in highly considered spaces.

We look forward to seeing the Indigo kitchen settled into its new surroundings, and to sharing more of the project as images come through. For now, it is just great to know that a piece first shown at WestEdge has found a home in one of Los Angeles’ most characterful and creative addresses.
