Why porcelain enamel is better than wood for outdoor kitchens

Wood has a natural warmth that many people love and in the right setting, it can bring nice texture and character to a garden. But when it comes to outdoor kitchens, beauty on day one is important, but the real question is how a material performs after years of rain, sun, cooking heat, food spills and ever changing seasons.

For a premium outdoor kitchen, we believe porcelain enamel offers a stronger, more practical and more durable solution than wood. It gives you the colour, tactility and visual richness that a high end outdoor space deserves, but with far less maintenance and much greater resilience.

Outdoor kitchens need materials that can handle the weather

The British climate is highly demanding, and outdoor kitchen materials must withstand regular rain, damp air, frost, UV exposure and changing temperatures. Wood is an organic material, so it naturally expands and contracts in response to moisture and heat. Over time, this can lead to warping, fading, cracking or swelling, particularly around joints, edges and fixings where water can more easily penetrate. In shaded or damp areas, algae and staining can also become an unpleasant issue.

Porcelain enamel behaves very differently as it is created by fusing powdered glass to steel at temperatures above 800°C. The result is a hard, non porous surface that does not absorb water, while easily resisting staining, UV exposure and high cooking temperatures, making it exceptionally well suited to life outdoors.

Why enamel is easier to live with

We believe an outdoor kitchen should make life easier, not add another maintenance task to the list. This is where enamel has a clear advantage over wood. Even high quality timber needs ongoing care, often requiring sealing, sanding or refinishing to maintain its appearance. Cooking marks from oil, wine, sauces, smoke and ash can settle into the grain or damage the protective finish, while cleaning must be done carefully to avoid causing further wear.

Porcelain enamel is smooth, hygienic and easy to wipe clean. It does not have a grain that traps dirt, and it does not rely on a surface treatment that needs to be renewed regularly. After cooking, the surface can be cleaned quickly with just a wipe of a soft cloth with some mild detergent. For anyone who enjoys entertaining outdoors, this makes a real difference as the kitchen can move from prep space to serving station and back to pristine finish with minimal effort.

Heat, stains and colour that lasts

Outdoor kitchens are exposed to all kinds of heat sources including grills, pizza ovens, hot pans and serving dishes. Wood can mark or scorch if exposed to heat, and protective finishes can be affected by repeated exposure to cooking conditions. Over time, sunlight can also alter the appearance of timber, often causing it to fade or change tone.

Porcelain enamel is naturally heat resistant with its colour being part of the fused glass surface, not just a painted layer sitting on top. This gives it a deep, luxurious quality that holds its character and beauty over time. Vlaze enamel finishes are designed to bring colour and texture into outdoor spaces without compromising performance, which is especially important for design led gardens and terraces.

With wood, the material often becomes more rustic as it ages, which can be attractive in some settings, but it may not suit a refined architectural scheme. Enamel gives a cleaner, sharper and more consistent finish, with colours that can complement planting, stone, brick, render or contemporary glazing. The result is an outdoor kitchen that can sit comfortably in a country garden, a roof terrace, a poolside pavilion or a compact city courtyard. It does not need to imitate an indoor kitchen, and it does not need to weather into the background. It can become a confident part of the design.

Enamel has endurance and flexibility

Many wooden outdoor kitchens are built into a specific position and become part of the landscaping, making them difficult to alter or move later. By contrast, the Vlaze ADAPT system is modular, so units can be arranged as a run, corner, island or sociable cooking space, then adapted as your needs change. Many pieces can also be specified with castors, allowing you to reposition the kitchen for entertaining or move elements under cover when needed.

This flexibility adds genuine long term value as a Vlaze kitchen does not have to be tied permanently to one garden layout. It is closer to beautifully engineered outdoor furniture that has a real sculptural quality and is made to serve you through the different seasons, different uses and even different homes.
